South Korea Arrests 59 for Suspected Online Scams in Cambodia

South Korea has arrested 59 people suspected of having participated in online scams in Cambodia.

In total, 64 South Koreans were deported from Cambodia over the weekend, where they were detained after being suspected of participating in online scams in the country.

South Korean authorities have previously stated that around 1,000 South Koreans are estimated to be part of the total of around 200,000 people involved in online scams in Cambodia.

Among the suspected scammers, there are said to be both "voluntary and involuntary participants" and some of them are said to have been threatened into committing scams, according to South Korea. It is said to involve, among other things, romance scams and so-called phishing.

The illegal scams have grown into an industry worth several billion dollars in recent years. Many of the scams are organized by criminal networks.
