According to the news agency, citing five people with knowledge, the government will ask Congress this week for a supplementary budget of a preliminary $50 billion.
They will go toward replacing weapons systems and ammunition used in recent conflicts, including the latest in the Middle East.
The White House is also planning a meeting with the heads of the largest American private defense companies to discuss the matter.
Neither the government nor any of the suppliers has commented on the Reuters report.
