The plane shot down by a Cuban fighter jet was used by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue to search for Cubans trying to escape on rafts, CBS News reports.

Raúl Castro formally stepped down as leader of Cuba's Communist Party in 2021, but is still seen as one of the country's most powerful figures. He is the brother of Fidel Castro.

The information comes as the United States increases pressure on Cuba. Donald Trump has previously threatened the country, including with suggestions of a "friendly takeover."

The Justice Department has not commented on the information. A formal indictment first requires approval by a grand jury.
