The fired lawyers, who are said to be more than ten, were involved in the investigation led by special prosecutor Jack Smith, according to NBC News.
Smith has investigated how and whether Donald Trump tried to cling to power after Joe Biden won the presidential election in 2020. Smith left his assignment within the Justice Department before Trump, who had promised to fire him, took office as president.
A source describes it as the acting Attorney General not trusting that the lawyers will help to "faithfully" implement US President Donald Trump's agenda.
According to sources in several American media outlets, prosecutors who have investigated cases related to the storming of the US Congress in 2021 may soon be investigated themselves.
The sources have, according to among others CNN, seen a document stating that the Trump administration has taken the first steps to investigate those involved in the storming for obstruction of the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
The Supreme Court decided last summer that the prosecutors exceeded their authority when they used obstruction as a charge against those involved.
The Trump-appointed prosecutor Ed Martin is said to have written that the prosecutors should hand over all information they have about the cases, and CNN calls it a "special project".
This comes after US President Donald Trump promised during his election campaign to seek revenge against those who participated in the storming.
