Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will take over as acting attorney general until further notice.

"Pam Bondi is a great American patriot and a loyal friend who has faithfully served as my Attorney General for the past year," Trump wrote.

According to two sources who told Fox News, Pam Bondi met with Trump at the White House on Wednesday evening before the president's address to the nation about the Iran war and then received the news.

Frustration over Epstein handling

The announcement follows previous reports in several American media outlets that Trump was considering firing her.

According to previous reports, Trump's top candidate to take over as attorney general has been Lee Zeldin, the current head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Sources familiar with the matter told the AP that Trump had expressed frustration with Bondi's handling of documents from the investigation into the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump is also said to have been unhappy with the Justice Department's lack of progress in investigating the president's political opponents.

Investigated political opponents

Under Bondi's leadership, the Justice Department has launched investigations into a number of people whom Trump has identified as opponents, including Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan.

Several of the investigations have been slowed or stopped by judges and grand juries.

Bondi has been accused of actively politicizing the Justice Department and reducing its independence from the Oval Office. She has brushed aside the criticism, arguing that it is about restoring the department's credibility following the federal indictments of Trump under President Joe Biden.
