It was the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) that wanted to sell World Cup shares to private investors through a subsidiary. One of the interested parties was Joshua Kushner - brother of Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
However, the plan met with harsh criticism and was scrapped by FIFA.
Now a group, led by Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger, has instead acquired the iconic NBA club Los Angeles Lakers.
The deal is expected to cost the group $12.5 billion, equivalent to almost 120 billion kronor, which is a new record for American sports, writes AP.
The deal now needs to be approved by the NBA board of directors.
