Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Iran's attack "a great mistake" on Tuesday evening and promised that Tehran would pay for it.
Whoever attacks us, we will attack them, said Netanyahu.
Air raid sirens sounded across the country on Tuesday evening when Iran carried out a comprehensive missile attack on Israel. At 19:30, Swedish time, Israel's military announced that people could leave the shelters.
According to the Israeli rescue service, at least two people have received "minor injuries" after the attack.
Double the number of missiles
Around 180 missiles were fired by Iran at Israeli territory, most of which were shot down by Israel, according to the military. It was double the number compared to Iran's last attack in April, according to the Pentagon.
We have carried out a large number of interceptions. There were some impacts in central Israel and other areas in the southern part of the country, says Hagari.
"We targeted three military bases around Tel Aviv", claims Iran's Revolutionary Guard in a statement.
Revenge for Nasrallah
According to AP's reporters on the spot, explosions were heard in Tel Aviv and near Jerusalem.
Iran confirms that tens of ballistic missiles have been fired at Israel. The attack is a revenge for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and a commander of the Revolutionary Guard, says the Revolutionary Guard in a statement.
President Joe Biden ordered the US military to help Israel's air defense and shoot down missiles.
Earlier warning
Earlier on Tuesday, American sources warned that Iran would soon carry out a ballistic missile attack on Israel.
"We actively support defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack", said a source who also warned that it would have "serious consequences for Iran".
Before the attack, Israel's army announced that the country was ready to "defend and attack".
Previous attack
Iran has previously said that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's death would lead to "Israel's destruction". However, on Monday, Iran's Foreign Ministry stated that the country would not send soldiers to fight against Israel.
In April this year, Iran attacked Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles. Even then, most of the projectiles were shot down. The attack was said to be a revenge after an Israeli attack that killed high-ranking Iranian military personnel at Iran's consulate in Syria.
