Iran is going through a "difficult period," but the hope is that it will all end in peace, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said during a visit by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to Russian state media.

Putin said the Iranian people are fighting "bravely and heroically" and said that Russia, which has so far kept a low profile in the conflict, is ready to support Iran.

Upon arrival in St. Petersburg, Araghchi blamed the United States for the failed peace talks.

The US approach meant that the previous round of negotiations, despite progress, failed to achieve its goals due to excessive demands, he said, according to Iranian state media.

Reopen the strait

Since US President Donald Trump canceled the trip to Pakistan by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner this weekend - after Iran rejected talks with the US there - the situation has been described as something of a stalemate.

Now Axios reports, citing American sources, that the United States has received a new proposal for an agreement from Iran via mediator Pakistan. The content is not known in full, but according to reports, Iran wants to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war - and postpone the nuclear talks until a later date.

The White House calls the information "sensitive diplomatic discussions."

"The United States will not negotiate through the press," White House deputy press secretary Olivia Wales said in a statement to CBS News.

Meeting in the situation room

According to the state-run Fars news agency, Iran has sent "written messages" with Iran’s red lines to the Americans, which reportedly include issues around nuclear energy and the Strait of Hormuz. The nuclear energy issue and Iran’s uranium enrichment have been among the US’s main stated reasons for the war since day one.

According to Axios, Trump will discuss the war with his security advisers in the White House's so-called situation room on Monday.
