The summit with the Union's heads of state and government will be held next Thursday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirms on SVT Agenda.
"There are fundamental values at stake and we are not ruling anything out, but we will meet this Thursday at the European Council and discuss things thoroughly. I, of course, hope for a very broad agreement on this," Kristersson says on SVT.
The President of the Council of the Union, António Costa, writes on X that member states agree tariffs are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement and would undermine transatlantic relations.
“Pure mafia methods”
A strategy for retaliatory tariffs is now being drawn up with the aim of European leaders being able to refer to it in meetings with Trump during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, next week, sources tell the Financial Times.
The proposal for tariffs of 93 billion euros was reportedly discussed at Sunday's meeting in Brussels, attended by ambassadors from the 27 member states, according to the newspaper.
The instrument that could be used to limit American companies' access to the EU's single market was also reportedly on the table.
"There are clear instruments of retaliation if this continues. (Trump) is using pure mafia methods," an EU diplomat briefed on Sunday's discussions told the FT.
Sources also say they are working to find a compromise to avoid deep cracks in NATO, which would endanger Europe's security.
Includes whiskey and cars
When the European Commission prepared a package of retaliatory tariffs against the United States this summer, it included American cars, aircraft and whiskey, Bloomberg reported.
The package of measures - then valued at around 72 billion euros - also included machinery products, chemicals and plastics, medical devices, electronics, wines and agricultural goods.
The package was shelved after the parties agreed on a preliminary trade agreement.
Trump's tariffs will take effect on February 1 and will be increased to 25 percent on June 1.
