The US president has previously threatened to leave NATO because Spain and France refused to support the US war on Iran. During a tense meeting at the White House on Wednesday, Trump reportedly attacked Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
According to an inside source, the meeting went "to hell."
The source, a European official, states that the conversation consisted of “nothing more than a tirade of insults” in which Trump “apparently threatened to do basically anything.”
According to three anonymous sources, the US president gave those present the impression that he wanted to see concrete steps from allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible. However, a White House official stated that the president did not make any such demands of NATO in connection with the meeting.
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart denies that the meeting between Trump and Rutte went badly. She tells Politico that the conversation was “constructive.”
