The fake songs are created with generative AI, with fraudsters pretending to be some of the company's artists such as Beyoncé, Queen and Harry Styles, writes the BBC.

The proliferation of counterfeits causes great commercial damage to legitimate artists and is particularly common with new album releases.

According to Sony, the number of deepfake songs is increasing as AI becomes cheaper and more accessible, and the tracks discovered so far likely represent only a fraction of the total number uploaded to streaming services.

Since March last year, approximately 60,000 songs have been identified as featuring artists such as Bad Bunny, Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson.
