The United States may gain exclusive access to Somaliland's minerals, the breakaway region's Prime Minister, Khadar Hussein Abdi, said in an interview with the AFP news agency.
"We are also open to offering military bases to the United States," he said.
In the interview, Khadar Hussein Abdi also discussed Israeli "military presence" in Somaliland - just months after Israel, in December 2025, became the first country to recognize the region as a sovereign state, which has been condemned by, among others, the EU and the African Union.
Israel's announcement fueled suspicions of an Israeli plan to move Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Somaliland.
Somaliland, in northwestern Somalia and strategically located on the Gulf of Aden, declared itself an independent republic in 1991.
