The United States could gain exclusive access to Somaliland's minerals, Prime Minister Khadar Hussein Abdi said in an interview with the AFP news agency.

Somaliland in northwestern Somalia, strategically located on the Gulf of Aden, declared itself an independent republic in 1991. In December 2025, Israel became the first country to recognize the region as a sovereign state, a move condemned by, among others, the EU and the African Union.
Israel's announcement fueled suspicions of an Israeli plan to move Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Somaliland.
Unlike Palestine, Somaliland is not a fictitious state, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar claimed during a visit to the region in January.
