Omar Artan was set to become the first from his country to referee at the World Cup, but was denied entry to the United States and excluded from the championship.

Somalia's Ministry of Youth and Sports defends Artan and emphasizes that he has its unwavering support.

"We have full confidence in his integrity, professionalism and continued contribution to the development of football both in Somalia and internationally," the ministry wrote in a statement, according to AFP.

U.S. authorities said Artan was denied entry because of concerns raised during a background check.

Artan said in a statement that, despite the circumstances, he remains positive and focused on upcoming challenges in his refereeing career, according to ESPN.
