S wants to move forward with abolishing the volume discount for violent and sexual crimes during the next term if it wins the election.

"It's about dangerous individuals being in prison for a long time. But unlike the Tidö government, we want it to come into effect as quickly as possible and then it must be done in an orderly manner," says the Social Democrats' legal policy spokesperson Teresa Carvalho at a press conference.

Vote no

The Social Democrats have previously said that they intend to vote no to the government's criminal justice reform, which includes abolishing the penalty discount, and which the Riksdag is due to decide on next week.

During the press conference, Carvalho sharply criticized the government's proposal, which she believes lacks funding and an entry into force date, due to the severe shortage of prison places.

It is a completely frivolous legal product, says Teresa Carvalho.

Increased penalties

S also wants to see targeted tougher sentences. For example, it is proposing to increase the maximum sentence for aggravated assault against a woman from six to eight years. The party also wants to review the penalty scale for child pornography offences, where more people could be sentenced to prison.

The penalties for particularly serious economic crimes linked to organized crime should also be tightened, according to S.

"This is another step in the fight against organized crime. A stricter penalty scale in combination with a Swedish mafia law gives us significantly better opportunities to break up both the gangs and the clans," says Teresa Carvalho.

The party also proposes measures to expand the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, amid repeated warnings of a lack of space in prisons.

We want to give a state actor a clear societal mission to accelerate expansion throughout the country, which is made possible, among other things, by avoiding procurement by property owners.
