Sweden is currently governed by a caretaker government that cannot make the decisions needed to maintain the temporary tax cuts, which expire in the fall. Together, the cuts amount to around 4 kronor (about $0.38) per liter of gasoline and just over 3 kronor (about $0.29) per liter of diesel.

If no decisions are made, the tax will automatically rise again when the cuts expire.

The SD therefore wants the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament) to act to prevent what it calls a "shock increase in fuel prices".

But on Thursday, the Finance Committee concluded that the issue is complicated, and the Red-Greens called the SD proposal unworkable.

The committee now wants to know what the Ministry of Finance considers possible and whether the Tidö parties had a plan for what could be implemented quickly when their tax cuts expire.
