A yellow warning for strong winds in the southern Lapland mountains was issued as early as Tuesday evening.
The orange warning for strong winds and snow applies to the northern Lapland mountains from noon on Wednesday until Thursday morning.
SMHI warns of very strong westerly winds on exposed mountain terrain, reaching speeds of 18 to 24 metres per second. At times, winds on the eastern side may reach storm force, with speeds of 25 to 30 metres per second. Precipitation is also expected, turning to sleet or snow.
Under an orange warning, you should avoid going into the mountains unless necessary. Rescue operations can be risky and take a long time. Visibility may also be reduced, making it difficult to find your way, and there may be a high risk of frostbite.
