SMHI: Heat Wave Brings Year's Warmest Weekend to Sweden

A heatwave is moving in over the country. According to SMHI, the weekend promises high-summer weather – and this year's warmest days. It will probably be pulled out one and another grill, says meteorologist Kjell Lund to TT.

Mostly sunny weather is expected for the entire country on Saturday, with temperatures rising to around 25 degrees in both northern and southern Sweden.

Today (Friday) we have a 20-degree boundary running through Jämtland, Medelpad and downwards, says Kjell Lund, on-duty meteorologist at SMHI.

On Saturday, even warmer air will move in, so it will be at least 20 degrees in almost all of Sweden.

Sunday will also be warm, with a maximum temperature that can reach 27–28 degrees in areas such as the Stockholm region and Uppsala.

It's the eastern parts of the country, but also in Jämtland and Medelpad, it will be up to 27 degrees.

New heat record?

Last May, a new heat record was set when Mora reached 25.4 degrees. The heat wave that is moving over the country will most likely mean a new record this weekend.

This will be warmer absolutely, says Kjell Lund.

Due to the heat, SMHI also warns of grass fires in the mountains and forest fires in parts of eastern Götaland and south-eastern Svealand on Friday. There is also a risk of water shortages in almost all of southern Sweden.

The south-eastern part of the country already has a large risk of forest fires, and this risk will be strengthened over the weekend.

“Slows down significantly”

But Sunday will also be more unstable in some areas, including the west coast, where there may be showers. In the evening and night into Monday, the weather will change as a cold front moves in from the west.

It will change quite significantly. It will be more unstable and cooler in the entire country. By Midsummer, it looks better, but it's still uncertain, says Kjell Lund.
