A smaller plane is feared to have crashed into a lake outside Bergen in Norway. According to the police, there were two people on board the plane.

A large rescue operation was underway on Tuesday afternoon in the Vinddalsvatnet sea area by Bjørnafjorden south of Bergen after a small plane disappeared following reports of problems.

"Two people are believed to have been on board the missing small plane. The police have been in contact with the relatives of these two," writes operation leader Dan Erik Joannessen in the Vests police district according to the news agency NTB.

Three helicopters, several boats, and divers participated in the search operation, which was concluded in the evening without the plane or the missing persons being found.

The search will resume on Wednesday, but hopes of finding survivors have been abandoned.
