The largest amount of plastic was found in various packaging, which totaled 307,000 tons.

Sweden produces approximately the same amount of plastic products as we export. A certain reduction in plastic on the market is seen compared to 2020 when the amount totaled 1.3 million tons. However, it is not a guarantee that Swedes' actual plastic use has decreased, since not all plastic used is visible in the statistics.

We have large flows of products that are imported directly, which we do not find, says Åsa Stenmarck, administrator at the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to the report, only 141,000 tons of plastic were recycled, approximately 13 percent. Large amounts of plastic were found in mixed waste from both households and businesses.

What is interesting is the composition analyses that have previously been done on households and now also on waste from businesses. We see that there is an enormous amount of plastic in those flows. It confirms that we are poor at sorting out, says Åsa Stenmarck.
