A small sports plane with a man and a woman on board was searched for north of Kiruna after taking off from the city. Late in the evening, rescue personnel found the couple safe and sound.

The plane took off on Saturday with a man and a woman on board to fly to a cabin about eighty kilometers north. The plane was capable of landing in rough terrain and in the prevailing weather conditions.

During the day, neither of them was heard from. Relatives became worried and called the police, and in the evening a large search operation was launched - including police, mountain rescue teams and emergency services.

Late in the evening, a Norwegian rescue helicopter flew over the cabin and saw smoke coming from the chimney.

"They were found in the cabin. Everything is fine with them. The reason this was initiated was that they were unable to call their relatives on their satellite phone," says Johan Wahlström, press spokesperson at the Swedish Maritime Administration's Maritime and Air Rescue Center (JRCC), to TT.

He also said the plane was found undamaged.
