Due to the war in Ukraine, most EU leaders have no contact with the regime in Moscow. Robert Fico is the only head of state or government from the EU to have traveled to Moscow in connection with the celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
Fico, whose country, along with Hungary, has been exempted from EU sanctions against Russian oil, was received by Putin at the Kremlin.
"We will do everything we can to meet Slovakia's energy needs," Putin told Fico during the meeting.
Pictures show that, before the meeting, Fico also participated in a ceremony outside the Kremlin to honor fallen soldiers.
