Slovakia’s Opposition Calls for New Elections as Support for Fico’s Coalition Erodes

Several members of parliament in Slovakia have withdrawn their support for Prime Minister Robert Fico's ruling coalition. The opposition is calling for new elections following the announcement.

Controversial Prime Minister Fico regained power in Slovakia in 2023 after forming a coalition government. At the same time, he has opened the door to increased contacts with Moscow, among other things.

But Fico's support has eroded recently, as several people who backed the government have turned their backs on him. Former Environment Minister Tomas Taraba, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote, has already started a party to challenge Fico.

According to the opposition, Fico no longer has majority support in the 150-member parliament, with only 75 members backing him.

Fico was first appointed prime minister in 2006.
