Finland's men's ice hockey team had a tough start at the Olympics, losing their opening game against Slovakia 1–4.

The first match in the men's hockey tournament at the Olympics delivered a surprise.

Slovakia took the lead in the first period, and it was not until well into the second that Finland managed to equalize, despite dominating play and outshooting them.

Finland pushed to force overtime, but instead it was Slovakia who regained the lead midway through the third. Slovakia extended the lead a few minutes later on the power play, and in the final minutes the 4–1 goal came into an empty net.

Finland will face Tre Kronor in a heated match on Friday. First, Sweden plays Italy on Wednesday evening.
