Thermometers showed 41 degrees on Monday in Turna nad Bodvou in southwestern Slovakia, according to the country's meteorological institute.
At two more measuring stations near the border with Hungary, temperatures were measured above the previous record of 40.3 degrees from 2007.
In the central parts of the neighbouring country, the temperature reached 41.8 degrees on Monday, just below the heat record of 41.9, also from 2007. Hungary's prime minister has ordered work from home and shortened working hours for those jobs where it is deemed possible.
