The loss in the round of 16 of the World Cup against Portugal was the end point for Zlatko Dalic's successful spell as coach of the Croatian national team.

Ten days after the departure, it is clear who will take over.

"Welcome back, Slaven Bilic," the Croatian Football Federation writes on X.

He now hopes to persuade 41-year-old superstar Luka Modric to continue in the national team.

"Of course I would like him to continue," Bilic told Sportske Novosti.

He previously led the Croatian national team between 2006 and 2012. His most recent coaching assignment was with Saudi al-Fateh, which he left in 2024.

As a player, he made 44 international appearances for Croatia and was part of the team that won the World Cup bronze medal in 1998.
