Not entirely unexpectedly, two female skiers, Ebba Andersson and Jonna Sundling, and two male track and field athletes, Armand Duplantis and Andreas Almgren, are among the nominations for Athlete of the Year for the Sports Gala on January 21. However, discus thrower Daniel Ståhl, who won gold at the World Championships in Tokyo, is being snubbed.
Andersson and Sundling each won three gold medals at the World Championships in Trondheim. Duplantis won World Championships gold and set four world records during the year, and Almgren won World Championships bronze in the 10,000 meters.
In addition to the skiers, there is mountain biker Jenny Rissveds, who this year won two European Championship gold medals and one World Championship gold medal and one World Championship silver medal, as well as volleyball star Isabelle Haak, who took Sweden to its first World Championship, won the Champions League with Conegliano and was named the most valuable player in the Champions League.
Duplantis and Almgren are challenged by table tennis star Truls Möregårdh, who won the World Championship bronze and two major tournaments, and Dalian Dawody, who this year won the World Championship gold in the 75-kilogram class of Thai boxing.
