Skarsgård is nominated in the category of best male actor for his role in Norwegian Joakim Trier's film "Sentimental Value".
The film is also on the shortlist for the Best European Film award. Trier is also nominated for the Best Director award.
Other films that could be nominated for best film include the German documentary "Riefenstahl", the French-Tunisian "The voice of Hind Rajab" and Ukrainian director Olha Zhurba's "Songs of slow burning earth", which is a Swedish co-production.
The European Film Academy, EFA, will present its awards at a gala in Berlin on January 17.
