Already at the end of February, the alarm was raised that the water level in Lake Vombsjön – Skåne's "tap" – was the lowest ever for this time of year since measurements began in 1969.
The water level is now just over a meter below normal for the time of year, despite the lake having been filled with meltwater in recent weeks.
VA Syd is now urging residents to, among other things, shower for three minutes rather than twice as long, keep a jug of water in the fridge - do not leave the tap running to keep it cold, run dishwashers and washing machines only when full, and collect rainwater to water the garden.
Everyone must contribute, says Maria Nordblad Stålgard, acting communications manager at VA Syd.
