The charges were laid before a federal court in the capital, Abuja, on Tuesday, giving a new twist to rumors of a planned coup in Africa's most populous country, after the government had previously denied any such plot.
Among those charged are former Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana and five others with ties to the military.
Reports of coup plans have been rife in Nigeria since several military personnel were arrested on "disciplinary" offenses in the fall of 2025.
Nigeria has experienced a number of military coups since gaining independence in 1960. After several totalitarian military regimes, it embarked on a democratic path in 1999.
