The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (SiS) has been tasked by the government to prepare for children to be able to wear ankle monitors or to be monitored electronically in other ways, starting next year.

The government has previously said that it wants more children in SiS homes to be monitored electronically via an ankle bracelet, wristband or watch, among other things, to prevent them from becoming involved in crime.

The assignment SiS is now receiving means the authority will begin preparations to implement electronic monitoring of children and young people from January 1, 2027.

Among other things, the preparations involve procuring equipment and technology, as well as adapting the organization's structure, routines and working methods.

A report on the assignment must be submitted no later than December 18, 2026.
