Children and young people who are cared for at Sis-homes have in several cases been subjected to violence and suspected abuse. This is shown by an investigation conducted by the Inspectorate for Health and Care (Ivo).
For 17 of the 21 youth homes run by the National Board of Institutions (Sis), Ivo notes serious deficiencies. At these homes, the conditions involving violence or threats to life and health are so serious that Ivo has taken measures or temporarily banned the activities.
One of the explanations for the serious situation is the lack of night staffing, according to the report>.
This indicates that what Sis has done to address the problems is not sufficient, says Pia Karlsson, unit manager at Ivo to Dagens Nyheter.
The fact that serious incidents can occur at several youth homes is an expression of the fact that Sis's systematic improvement work has not functioned.
In mid-May, a report from the Children's Rights Agency showed that staff violence against children is increasing at the country's Sis-homes. Mainly, it is young girls – despite several previous warnings.
In 2024, there were 21 special youth homes with over 700 places under Sis's management.
