Spanish clay king Carlos Alcaraz suffered a stinging defeat when Italian Jannik Sinner won the Monte Carlo final on Sunday. The victory was Sinner's first major title on clay.
"It means a lot to me because it shows that I am developing," says Sinner.
He also took over as world number one from Alcaraz, who had held the top spot since November.
"It's fun. But it doesn't change my thought process. I play to win tournaments and Carlos and I are very even, so the rankings can change from week to week," says Sinner.
The biggest clay court tournament of the year, the French Championships, will be played May 18-June 7.
