The chairman of the Laureus sports prize, Sean Fitzpatrick, announces.
"After discussions in the Laureus Academy, it has been decided to withdraw Jannik Sinner's nomination for the prize as the best male athlete of the year. We feel that the three-month suspension makes the nomination invalid", he says in a statement.
In mid-February, Sinner and the International Anti-Doping Agency Wada announced that they had reached an agreement, which means that the Italian will be suspended for three months.
Wada had appealed a decision by the International Tennis Federation ITF to acquit Sinner, who in March last year submitted a positive doping test with traces of the anabolic steroid clostebol.
According to Sinner, he accidentally ingested the banned substance in connection with a massage, since the physiotherapist had treated a wound with a medium containing the prohibited substance.
