Jannik Sinner is the new number one on the men's World Championship ranking in tennis. It is the first time an Italian has been at the top since the digital ranking was introduced in 1973.
Sinner has won 33 matches this year and lost only three. Two of the losses have come against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. The latest in a five-setter in the semi-final of the French Championships last week.
Alcaraz then won the final against Alexander Zverev and is second on the World Championship ranking. Former number one Novak Djokovic, who was forced to withdraw from the quarter-final in Paris due to a knee injury, is third and Zverev fourth.
Jannik Sinner will be top-seeded in Wimbledon, this year's third Grand Slam tournament, which starts on 1 July.
