When Alcaraz retired early in France, it was clear that he would lose his place as world number one if Sinner managed to take home the tournament.
On Sunday, the Italian completed the mission after a 6–4, 7–6 (7–4) victory over Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime in the final.
Sinner became world number one for the first time in his career in June last year, but after 65 weeks at the top, he lost the top spot to Alcaraz after losing to the Spaniard in the grand slam final of the US Open in September this year.
