Those who live alone in a rental property often pay more for their accommodation than those who live alone in a condominium or owner-occupied property, according to statistics from the Statistics Sweden (SCB).

According to SCB's figures, however, the expenses for owned homes have increased more in percentage terms in recent years.

"The fact that housing expenses for owner-occupied and tenant-owned apartments have increased more is largely due to the fact that interest expenses for mortgages have increased sharply," says Marcus Vingren, researcher at SCB, in a press release.

In 2024, 1.8 million households lived in rental apartments, of which one million were single-person households. Their median expenditure is around 81,000 per year.

In tenant-owned apartments, approximately half of the households are single-person households, and they pay 77,000 kronor per year for housing. In owner-occupied apartments, the median expenditure for single-person households is 76,000 kronor per year.

Housing expenses have increased for all forms of tenure since 2021, when SCB conducted the last measurement. The rent-controlled apartments' expenditure has increased the least in percentage terms, approximately 18 percent, while the tenant-owned apartments' expenditure has increased by almost 29 percent.<|start_header_id|>assistant<|end_header_id|> According to SCB's figures, however, the expenses for owned homes have increased more in percentage terms in recent years.
