In a world with an abundance of impressions, people need an incentive to read - that is the reasoning in Singapore.
Starting this month, readers can log in daily to a website created by the authorities, allowing them to collect points that can be exchanged for a small amount of money.
More reading should contribute to greater critical thinking, increased concentration and free the imagination, writes the Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times.
A reading session of 15 minutes or more generates 20 virtual coins. Once you have collected 1,000 coins, you can exchange them for one dollar.
The reading initiative will run for five years.
