Sidney Crosby Plans Vasa Museum Visit During Ice Hockey World Championship

A visit to the Vasa Museum 17 years ago has etched itself into the memory of superstar Sidney Crosby. We'll have to go there and check it out, says the 37-year-old legend ahead of the Ice Hockey World Championship.

When Canada conducted its first training session at Hovet ahead of the World Championship, TV teams and journalists flocked around the Pittsburgh star.

It's the first time in ten years that the three-time Stanley Cup champion and double Olympic Games gold medalist participates in the World Championship.

It will be his first championship in Sweden, but he has memories from 2008 when his Pittsburgh met Ottawa in two NHL matches.

"A great idea"

He recalls a ghost hunt that his team carried out in Stockholm, but also brings up the visit to the Vasa Museum.

I don't know how much time we have. We play many matches in a short time. But it's a great idea, he says.

So what made Crosby bet on the World Championship in Stockholm since his Pittsburgh missed the Stanley Cup playoffs?

I love to play and when you get a chance to represent Canada, you take it. It's not always possible due to the Stanley Cup playoffs or being tired.

Gold last time

Last time Crosby played the World Championship, in the Czech Republic in 2015, Canada took gold.

Crosby's friend, forward star Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado, is also on the team. Also, last year's draft pick Macklin Celebrini, the 18-year-old from San Jose, is on the team.

Tonight, the news also came that goalkeeper Jordan Binnington and forward Brayden Schenn will reinforce from St Louis.

Binnington was the starting goalkeeper in the Canada that won the Four Nations in February.

It looks good, the team has been put together in a short time, so it's about us growing during the tournament, he says.

Tre Kronor has taken in 17 NHL players in their squad so far. Crosby has respect for the home nation.

I haven't seen the updates on all the squads, but saw some of the guys when we stepped onto the ice. Many familiar faces. It looks like they have a really good team. When we played against them in the Four Nations, we saw how fast and cohesive they are, says Crosby, whose Canada defeated Sweden in the Four Nations after overtime.

Canada plays its first match on Saturday and meets Slovenia.
