The target is set high. Bergqvist aims to win the most medals at a European Championship, with the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg the best so far, with six medals and 69 championship points.

"It's a tough goal, but it's motivating. It's within reach, even if it requires a very good championship from us," says Bergqvist at a digital press conference.

It's amazing how broad the top ranks are in Swedish athletics right now.

The Kamga sisters

Vanessa Kamga has been selected for a long time, but on Friday it became clear that Kamga's younger sister, Patricia, will also be going to Birmingham.

It's amazing. Patricia has been to a few championships as a spectator. She was at the last World Championships to cheer on her sister. It's amazing to have these sisters helping, supporting and cheering each other on, says Bergqvist, who pays tribute to the younger Kamga:

Patricia has been one of our most promising juniors for a couple of years. She has had a bit of trouble with continuity, but now the pieces are starting to fall into place. She is definitely a thrower who I believe will reach her big sister's level in her event before too long.

Lycke Holm withdrawn

After the Swedish Championships, high jumper Melwin Lycke Holm said he would end the season if there was no European Championships. But he was selected.

What I wanted to see at the Swedish Championships was that he is on his way back to good form and that his body is holding up, because there have been injuries and it has been difficult for him to find continuity. I think he showed that, says Bergqvist about Holm, who won Swedish Championship gold.

19-year-old Carmen Cernhjul will compete at the U20 World Championships, and will go directly from that championship to the European Championships.

Mondo fresh

There are many around who think it's too much for her to compete in the U20 World Championships and then go straight to the European Championships. And it's a lot, it's tough. But her absolute will after the discussions that have taken place is that she feels ready for this and that she wants to do this double, says Bergqvist.

National team captain Bergqvist also has reassuring news about Armand Duplantis, who was forced to withdraw from the Diamond League competition in London a couple of weeks ago.

"It has gone as well as he could ever expect in the treatments he has received after the experience he had there," she says.

The European Championships in Birmingham run from August 10–16.
