One of the two National Guardsmen who was shot near the White House on Wednesday has died from her injuries, Donald Trump announced. She just passed away, the president said in a video call with American soldiers.

Trump praises the 20-year-old woman as “a respected, young, amazing person” and goes on to give a status update on her colleague.

The other young man is fighting for his life, he is in very bad shape.

The shooting took place at a subway station in the US capital, Washington, D.C. Two National Guard soldiers were patrolling there when a man went on the attack, according to police.

A 29-year-old suspect from Afghanistan has been arrested and is being treated in hospital. He previously served in Afghanistan's US-sponsored army for 10 years, relatives and government sources tell NBC News.

The man worked in collaboration with the US government and also specifically with the CIA, "as a member of a partner force in Kandahar," CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed in a statement.

The suspect came to the United States in September 2021 – a few weeks after the United States withdrew all forces from Afghanistan under chaotic conditions where the Taliban took back government power.
