One of the two National Guardsmen, Sarah Beckstrom, who was shot near the White House on Wednesday, has died from her injuries, Donald Trump announced. She just passed away, the president said in a video call with American soldiers.

Trump praises 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom as “a respected, young, amazing person” and goes on to give a status update on her colleague.

The other young man is fighting for his life, he is in very bad shape.

The shooting took place at a subway station in the US capital, Washington, D.C. Two National Guard soldiers were patrolling there when a man went on the attack, according to police.

Sarah Beckstrom, from Webster Springs, joined the West Virginia National Guard in 2023, according to US media.

A 29-year-old suspect from Afghanistan has been arrested and is being treated in hospital. He previously served in Afghanistan's US-backed army for 10 years, relatives and government sources tell NBC News.

The man was then working in collaboration with the United States and also specifically with the CIA intelligence service, "as a member of a partner force in Kandahar," CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed in a statement.

The suspect came to the United States in September 2021 – a few weeks after the United States withdrew all forces from Afghanistan under chaotic conditions where the Taliban took back government power.
