A so-called super tiebreak was needed to decide the match. There, Starodubtseva, ranked 55th in the world, emerged victorious 10–4. This gave her a 2–1 lead in the match (3–6, 6–1, 7–6).
"It's honestly hard to put this into words. I'm incredibly happy," said Yulia Starodubtseva after the victory, her first against a top-10 player.
Yelena Rybakina won the Australian Open earlier this year and also has a Wimbledon title from 2022. However, the French Open is a Grand Slam tournament where the 26-year-old has struggled. The Russian-born Kazakh has at best reached the quarterfinals, and is now out already in the second round.
