SHL Tells Clubs to Keep Players From Commenting on Russia Issue, Email Shows

The SHL is urging clubs to keep their players silent on the Russia issue, according to an internal email obtained by Aftonbladet.

The ice hockey world has been in turmoil since Friday, when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that Russia would be welcomed back to the World Cup next year.

Finland, Norway and Denmark say they intend to boycott matches against Russia in the men's World Cup this spring. The Swedish Ice Hockey Association is opposed to Russia's participation, but does not want to discuss a boycott.

The league organization SHL supports the federation's position. However, in an email seen by Aftonbladet, the clubs are instructed not to let players express their opinions on the Russia issue.

The email states, among other things: "Avoid answering questions from the media as much as possible and refer generally to the SHL and SIF (Swedish Ice Hockey Association)."

An anonymous club leader is upset.

"This bothers me. No one should tell our players what they should say about the Russia issue," the leader tells Aftonbladet.
