57-year-old Eriksson has served with Örebro in various roles for ten consecutive ice hockey seasons. This season Örebro finished tenth in the SHL and were eliminated in the round of 16 by Luleå, 1–2 in the best-of-three series. Eriksson had one year remaining on his contract as Örebro's head coach, but the collaboration is now ending immediately.
"Niklas has been one of Örebro Hockey's most important figures during his time in the SHL. At the same time, after careful evaluation, we have concluded that this change is the best thing for Örebro Hockey," says sports director Henrik Löwdahl in a statement on the club's website.
