Ship horn wakes sleeping polar bear in Svalbard, triggers 50,000 kroner fine

The hissing bear was sighted the other day from a ship in Lomfjorden in the archipelago.

“A person on board used the ship's horn to wake the bear,” the governor, the highest representative of the Norwegian state on the islands, explained.

But polar bears are strictly protected and must not be disturbed unnecessarily. The person was reported by others on the ship and has now agreed to pay a fine of 50,000 kronor, writes Sysselmesteren.
