The series, which premiered in 2024, depicts the power struggles in Japan in the 17th century. It is based on a novel by James Clavell.
It was initially intended as a miniseries, but was so popular that a second and third season were quickly ordered. Therefore, season two is completely independent of the novel and takes place ten years after the original story.
Emmy winner Hiroyuki Sanada returns in the role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and has also taken on a producer's hat, as well as Cosmo Jarvis, who reprises the role of John Blackthorne.
