The family had already begun the mourning rituals when the call came: Dawa Sherpa had been found alive, six days after he disappeared in difficult conditions on the world's highest mountain.
We had given up hope, said Mrs. Damu Sherpa at a hospital in Kathmandu, where her husband is now being treated for frostbite and dehydration.
Dawa Sherpa was found near Mount Everest base camp early Thursday.
He crawled down, said rescue leader Pemba Sherpa.
British mountaineer Chris Thrall, who reached the summit of Everest with Dawa Sherpa on May 29, mourned the Sherpa's death on Instagram on Wednesday, saying the two had become separated on the way down.
