In 2025, 669,400 applications were made in the 27 EU member states, compared with 912,400 the previous year. This brings the total figure down to the same levels as before the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's expanded war in Ukraine.
The most new applications were made in Spain, with 141,000, ahead of Italy with 126,600 and France with 116,400. Together with Germany and Greece, these countries account for 83 percent of all new applications.
According to Eurostat, Sweden saw 4,915 new applications, a decrease of 27 percent.
In terms of country of origin, Venezuela had the most, with 89,500 new asylum applicants in the EU, followed by Afghanistan with 63,800 and Syria with 40,000.
