A man who has been convicted of several different sex crimes has been released by British police.

The man's crime received significant attention and led to immigration-critical protests, after he among other things assaulted a 14-year-old girl shortly after arriving in the UK by boat.

In September, he was sentenced to one year in prison. But on Saturday, British police announced that the 38-year-old man had been released from prison in Essex by mistake. He has since been spotted on a train, and is now believed to be in the London area.

Several police forces are now working to find and arrest him. Justice Minister David Lammy says according to Sky News that he "on behalf of the public is furious" that the man is on the loose.
