The woman tested positive for hantavirus after being evacuated from the cruise ship. She had previously sought treatment on board for flu-like symptoms, but according to the doctor, it was likely due to anxiety.
Spain's Secretary of State for Health, Javier Padilla Bernáldez, tells The Guardian that the woman had suffered from flu-like symptoms, but that they seemed to be improving and that she did not have a fever:
Therefore, it was not considered hantavirus.
On the evacuation flight home to France, the woman quickly deteriorated and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), her condition is critical.
Correction: An earlier version incorrectly stated Javier Padilla Bernáldez's title. The correct title is Secretary of State for Health and Medical Services.
