Inmates allegedly set the prison building on fire, and the fire spread to several dormitories.
"Seven prisoners have died and dozens have been injured - from burns or suffocation - after a riot," state television reports.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), nine people died in the fire.
